The Benefits of Fish Oils and Dieting
Fish oils are the latest trend in healthy eating. Everywhere you look, people are telling you to make sure you’re getting fish oils into your diet. You can do it by increasing the fish that you eat or by taking fish oil supplements. However, while everyone is starting to learn that fish oils are an important part of a healthy diet, not everyone knows why they’re important or what type of benefits they offer.
First, it isn’t the fish oil itself that is so healthy. Instead, its two fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that are so beneficial. These are omega-3 fats and are essential nutrients in a balanced diet. If you’re currently dieting, it might seem strange to you that it is important to get fatty acids into your diet. Aren’t you trying to eliminate fat from your diet?
It may or may not surprise you to learn that fat is vital for a healthy body. Unfortunately, fat is a main ingredient in many of the foods we find so delicious. We end up eating far too much of something that, in moderation, is actually very healthy for us. Furthermore, the fat that exists in most of the foods we love to eat is not the healthiest fat for us. The fat in processed and fast foods are primarily saturated fats, ones that are not effectively used by the body.
When you’re on a diet and trying to lose weight, it is very important to make sure you significantly reduce your fat intake. It’s very difficult to burn the calories you get from fat. However, if you completely eliminate fat from your diet, you’ll be missing out on certain nutrients that you can only get in fat, including (but not exclusively) EPA and DHA. Fortunately, the fatty acids in fish oils are not nearly as difficult for the body to break down and contain many fewer calories.
Many of the benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids will also help you in your diet. One of the biggest benefits of omega-3 acids is how they affect the cardiovascular system. They help clear your veins and arteries of clogs, improving your circulation and reducing your risk of heart disease. Because it keeps your blood’s path clear, your chances of a stroke are also reduced. Fish oils have also been shown to be beneficial psychologically; they help alleviate the effects of depression, which can sometimes be a factor when you’re trying to diet. Making fish oils a regular part of a healthy diet can increase the positive effects of that diet and make the diet easier at the same time.
